Juniper Networks Collaborates with Gainspeed to Deliver Next-Generation Virtualized Converged Cable Access Platform

New Joint Solution Enables Cable Operators to Seamlessly Transition to an All-IP Environment While Preserving Capital Costs With a High-IQ Network.

LOS ANGELES, CA -- April 29, 2014 -- (The Cable Show 2014) -- Juniper Networks (NYSE: JNPR), the industry leader in network innovation, today announced the Virtual Converged Cable Access Platform (Virtual CCAP), a groundbreaking solution from its collaboration with Gainspeed, a disruptive innovator focused on redefining how cable networks are built that will enable cable operators to readily address growing consumer demand for data services over cable networks. Through the integration of Gainspeed's technology with Juniper Networks MX Series 3D Universal Edge Routers and EX Series Switches, the new Virtual CCAP solution will allow cable operators to better automate and scale their edge/access network infrastructure while creating a platform for new cloud-based services for their residential and commercial subscribers, all at a dramatically lower cost point.

The cable industry continues to face escalating capacity requirements driven by massive growth in high bandwidth, narrowcast traffic, such as video-on-demand and high-speed data, while migration to IP video delivery and the need for faster service deployment are putting pressure on traditional business models. The current hybrid fiber coax (HFC) and headend architectures are restricting capacity, hindering the roll out of new service offerings, slowing deployment velocity and limiting revenue potential. These legacy architectures are not only straining cable multi-system operator (MSO) CAPEX budgets, but are also putting huge demands on their facilities in terms of power, cooling and space.

Additionally, the current access network infrastructure protocol for IP transport known as the Data Over Cable Service Interface Specification (DOCSIS) will no longer be used just for high-speed data, but will be the foundation for all services delivered to homes and businesses. This transformation is forcing cable operators to evaluate how best to provide new all DOCSIS-based services while taking advantage of trends in modern computing and networking.

Gainspeed, backed by Juniper Networks Strategic Investments, can deliver a next-generation cable platform that will address the limitations of today's cable networks in a simple and cost-effective manner.

News Highlights:

The Juniper Networks and Gainspeed integrated Virtual CCAP solution will allow cable operators to gracefully and pragmatically deliver nearly a 10 times increase in scale and data capacity, while enabling new revenue and service models by leveraging advances in modern silicon, systems packaging, cloud computing and software defined networking (SDN) by:

  • Reducing the total cost of capacity by as much as 67 percent, as compared to existing solutions by alleviating power, space and cooling constraints on existing facilities and eliminating physical cable modem termination system (CMTS) platforms
  • Enabling increased automation of the overall Cable MSO network, and specifically the edge/access infrastructure, as it will allow for the seamless transition to an all IP, all-DOCSIS environment
  • Providing greater scale of edge/access networks by allowing Cable MSOs to leverage the full potential of the MX Series 3D Universal edge routing platforms, which can scale to 34Tbps at the network edge
  • Leveraging DOCSIS to deliver more than just high-speed data, thus opening up a host of revenue opportunities for operators such as commercial VPNs, WiFi backhaul, small-cell backhaul, and carrier-grade MPLS services

To assist customers with the transition to highly customizable networks, Juniper Networks offers a full range of professional services. These include assessment, planning and migration services to support customers with roadmap development, design, deployment and integration with their existing operations.
